About Us

The St. Louis Association of Community Organizations (SLACO), established in the late 1970s and incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1978, serves as a connecting organization for the St. Louis region’s neighborhood associations. Guided by principles of self-determination and democracy, SLACO has supported neighborhood-led priorities for more than 45 years, addressing shared challenges related to strengthening communities across the region.

Our Board is composed of representatives from every member neighborhood plus four at-large members, ensuring that the organization’s work remains driven by the people it serves. Professional staff executes issues and projects determined by neighborhood leaders, including ongoing efforts to advance community policing, racial equity, and partnership-based change inspired by Forward Through Ferguson and the Forward Through Ferguson report, which SLACO adopted in 2014.

Our Mission

To improve the quality of life for the residents and stakeholders of neighborhoods of the St. Louis region through community-based initiatives, citizen empowerment, neighborhood organizing, and building the resiliency of its community organization membership.

Our Vision

SLACO will be the preeminent St. Louis area organization dedicated to strengthening and providing technical support to neighborhood associations allowing them to build their capacity and accomplish their goals. SLACO strives that one day all St. Louis neighborhoods are served by a representative neighborhood organization. SLACO is committed (to supporting neighborhood planning as a means) to enhancing the livability of each neighborhood and strengthening the unique identity of each.
